The Family Media Agreement

A simple, no-signup agreement you and your kids fill in together. Talk through each line, check the ones you agree on, fill in the blanks for your family, and both sign it. Revisit every few months as kids grow.

1. Where & when devices live

  • Devices charge overnight outside the bedroom — in the   (e.g. kitchen).
  • No screens during meals or family time.
  • Screens off by   on school nights,   on weekends.
  • Homework comes before games, video, and social.

2. How much time

  • Daily screen-time limit for fun:   on school days,   on weekends.
  • Ask a parent before downloading a new app or game.
  • Ask before spending money — no purchases, in-game currency, or loot boxes without a yes.

3. Staying safe online

  • I won't share my full name, address, school, or photos with people I don't know in real life.
  • I won't try to get around the family's filters or controls (VPNs, proxies, another network).
  • If something scares, confuses, or upsets me online, I'll tell a parent — I won't be in trouble for asking.
  • I'll be kind online and never use a screen to tease, exclude, or hurt anyone.

4. What the grown-ups promise

  • We'll listen without overreacting when you come to us with a problem.
  • We'll model the same habits — phones down at meals, too.
  • We'll explain why a rule exists, and revisit this together as you get older.

5. If the agreement is broken

  • First time: a conversation and a reset.
  • After that, the agreed consequence is:  .
